You wake up regretting what you ate the night before because it was way too much food. Before you get out of bed, you strategize how “good” you’re going to be today, eating clean food and skipping carbs (or meals) to compensate from last night’s binge.
Getting out of bed is a struggle but you're still stepping on the scale, like usual. You think it'll motivate you, even though it's more frustrating than encouraging. After seeing the number on the scale, the perfectionist in you is determined to go on a diet again. This time it will be different. This time it’ll be 100% "healthy" eating.
At work, you're invited to meet your co-workers for lunch, but you're worried that you'll screw the diet when you see others ordering what you really crave. But you stay strong and willing, and stick with a salad. By the time you go home, you feel tired and hungry. So you stop at the store and get what you've been wanting to eat all day long. I get it, I was there too. I also wanted to stop struggling and feel good, break free from the insane cycle of dieting-restricting-binging, and be comfortable in my own skin. But I was stuck believing that the next diet would be the solution to my problems.
During that time in my life, I would wake up thinking about food. I was a health coach looking like I made all the right choices around food, when in reality I was struggling to make peace with it. While I knew what was nourishing for the body, I was at war with food. How can something so nourishing could be so "harmful?"
It was a cycle. I tried all the trendy diets in hopes that I would lose weight. I tried hot yoga, lymphatic massages, juice cleanses and even therapy. I would lose it for a period of time just to gain it back after episodes of binging on foods I had restricted for weeks. After years of this cycle, I ended up feeling emotionally exhausted and hopeless.
There has to be more to life than fighting what I eat every single meal!
I had a reality check and then something happened... I realized I had given too much power and attention to what I ate and how I looked because I somehow believed that I could only be happy if I looked “perfect;” instead of focusing on what's truly important, which was right in front of me - my relationships, my work, my goals in life, and all the good stuff that was already happening for me.
